American Country artist Kendall Phillips has just dropped her brand new release Backyard Getaway and it's infectious.
Just how COVID-19 is going to inform future artistic expression remains to be seen, but no doubt the process has already begun. Which road do we venture down? The dark or the light?
The doom and gloom assessments or the wide-eyed re-awakenings? American country artist Kendall Phillips has chosen the latter approach, in a sense. As Phillips has said about the origins of her new single release Backyard Getaway, ‘I actually wrote it back in 2017 while driving somewhere between Pennsylvania and Virginia, but now seemed like the perfect time to record,’ Phillips said. ‘My entire summer tour has been cancelled, I’m verging on broke, and a vacation is definitely nowhere in my future. This song is so 2020, it’s so me’.
And no doubt it’s also a little like many others’ predicament. Attitude, in some cases, might just be the key to surviving some adversities and Backyard Getaway, as one would expect from a contemporary country-pop tune, has a surplus of that. It’s a bright and effervescent approach to dealing with the new parameters of this potentially paralysing disease: a musical distillation of a defensive stance that is sure to strike a chord with audiences whether they’re into country-pop or not.
And that’s an integral aspect of the appeal of this track, aside from the lyric; its genre-bending attempt is for the most part successful, careening along at a satisfying pace, reaching for those highs at both the expected and not so expected moments.
‘‘My entire summer tour has been cancelled, I’m verging on broke, and a vacation is definitely nowhere in my future. This song is so 2020, it’s so me’.
Phillips’ self-assured performance leaves no doubt as to the level of musicianship we’re dealing with here, after all, she has a wealth of various musical experiences, if that kind of validation is required, including being a Top 5 National Finalist in the 2010 and 2011 Texaco Country Showdowns, the world’s largest country music competition, her house-hold name making appearances on American Idol and touring across the US opening for major acts including Justin Moore, Darius Rucker, Steel Magnolia, Lady Antebellum, Blake Shelton, and Jerrod Neimann, as well as appearing at the home of the Grand OIe Opry, The Ryman Auditorium with LeAnn Rimes and Country Music Hall Famer, Charlie McCoy. Kendall Phillips’ Backyard Getaway has an easy-going, idiosyncratic edge to it, and one that will no doubt appeal to a broad audience.
