The Burbs - Ladder To The Moon

Emerging from the fertile grounds of the Surf Coast/Geelong rock scene, The Burbs have steadily built their reputation since 2016.

Known for their electrifying sold-out shows and East Coast tours, they craft a sound that combines pop melodies with darker lyrical themes, invoking a profound sense of nostalgia that lingers long after the music fades.2024 has been a pivotal year for The Burbs.

Their 12-track demo album, Sunlight Spills Across The Swimming Pool, has marked a significant step in their artistic evolution. With the release of their latest single, Ladder To The Moon, they once again demonstrate their ability to captivate. This soft-rock ballad, rich with metaphoric lyrics, is complemented by Pink Floyd-esque guitars, creating a soundscape that is both timeless and contemporary. The song begins with a haunting vocal sample that seamlessly transitions into an acoustic guitar progression.

The first chorus hooks the listener with a blend of classic rock and folk influences. As the track unfolds, a psychedelic rock sensibility emerges. A lush musical interlude filled with vocal harmonies and sweet chords adds depth, leading to a final chorus that transitions effortlessly into an outro. Lyrically, Ladder To The Moon is a reflection on aspirations and the passage of time.

‘Built a ladder to the moon, hope you made it come back soon,’ speaks to the longing for dreams to return with the same clarity and hope they once held. ‘And if they try to come in, then we ain’t got any room,’ captures the protective nature of personal ambitions.

‘‘ This single not only solidifies their status as a standout act in the contemporary rock scene but also hints at even greater things to come.

The lyrics continue with, ‘Later the school made you a plaque, gave the line but missed the mark,’ highlighting the superficial recognition often bestowed upon genuine efforts. ‘Well since we’re in the future now, it shouldn’t be so dark,’ juxtaposes the expectation of progress with the lingering shadows of disappointment.

These lyrics, intertwined with the music, create a narrative that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. The Burbs’ ability to blend diverse musical elements into a cohesive and emotionally charged track is on full display in Ladder To The Moon. This single not only solidifies their status as a standout act in the contemporary rock scene but also hints at even greater things to come.
