Sydney based singer-songwriter Lucy Burke has just dropped her latest release Luckiest Girl, a great track that explores the bittersweet world of unrequited love.
It’s a marvellous fusion of pop, funk and orchestral driven by Lucy’s exquisite vocal performance. Lucy has been slowly establishing a name for herself both at a local level and nationwide.
She was the feature artist at The Sydney Football Stadium in 2016 after winning the Bands On Stage competition and the feature artist at The Australian Songwriters Awards in 2017 where she performed her single Leaving on a Lie.
Luckiest Girl follows her previous releases Nighttime and Calm Before the Storm, recorded with engineer Luke Bertoz (Tales in Space, Dappled Cities). After two albums, Botany Street (2008) (recorded at Abbey Road Studios London) Chasing Sparks(2014) (recorded and produced by Sean Carey, former guitarist of Thirsty Merc) and the EP Behaviour (2013) Lucy has now developed her style utilising a powerful blend of ambient, orchestral and pop.
‘It’s about loving someone in the past and knowing they have moved on. Feelings are bittersweet as you come to terms with letting someone go, knowing they will make another person happy’.
Luckiest Girl features Lucy’s trademark wide range and emotionally charged vocal skills, as well as her abilities to write finely-crafted melodies and vivid lyrics. The production is panoramic, a big wide sound that incorporates a thoughtful array of instrumentation and harnesses dynamics to great effect.
The bittersweet themes of the lyric are beautifully reflected in this expansive sound, creating a mood which is not entirely melancholic and not entirely upbeat but somewhere in between. As Lucy says about the song, ‘It’s about loving someone in the past and knowing they have moved on. Feelings are bittersweet as you come to terms with letting someone go, knowing they will make another person happy’.
The track melds the past with the present to create an alluring sonic mix. And I’m sure Luckiest Girl will make many new listeners and existing fans very happy.
